Genuinely fascinated, Lan Wangji examines the name, surprised that the mansion is not doing its usual work and resolving it into characters before his eyes the way it typically does. Its work with names is inexpert, he has noticed -- their meanings are often muddled, with only the sounds matching, and sometimes even that is a stretch. Once he has studied her name for an intent and thoughtful moment, he picks up his brush, dips it in the ink, and does his level best to write it to the left of the line of poetry he has transcribed. It is imperfect, but he is skilled at calligraphy, and paying close attention.
